Reading Homework for First Grade

Image result for reading homework

As we are all comfortably acclimated to the new school year it is time to start homework. Beginning today, Monday August 28 (through Thursday), the teachers will be sending home books for your child to read as reading homework. The books are just right books so your child should be able to read most of the words. Please sit with your child and have him/her read to you, ask questions, enjoy your special moment together. Please remember to return the book the next day in order to receive a new and different one. More information about homework will be spoken about during open house so it is very important for everyone to attend.

Have a great week,
The First Grade Team

The Eagle Way
One of the most exciting and memorable locations in our school is the playground!  Children take great joy in the physical activity and social connections they make as they swing on the swings, zoom down the slide, or make a goal on the soccer field.  When all of our active children are following The Eagle Way on the playground, it is a safe and happy place to be.  Click here to enlarge The Eagle Way playground guide.

Ms. Keane's Week of Fun

We have really been getting to know each other and developing our classroom community. Specifically we have been focusing on the eagle way. Check out the pictures below of students showing how respectful they are being in line.

Also we have been playing lots of games in math such a bunny hop, roll and tally, race to 20 and penny dice. Make sure to ask your kids about the games.

In addition students had a wonderful time looking at all the new exciting books in the library. Make sure to ask Dr. Purcell.

It has been a great week and we are looking forward to seeing everyone at open house!

Students have been working on “Livro EU”, the book about themselves. We have read books about family, homes and school. They have been singing a very traditional Brazilian song from the Northeast region of Brasil, “Cipó do Miroró.

Happy Birthday, Olivia!! (Ms. H's class)

Important Message from Ms. Burnquist!

Dear Parents, August 25, 2017
RAZ Kids is a wonderful online library with hundreds of books for early readers all the way through the elementary school grades. Students use it in class almost every day. At home, students may login using our class login, which is Graded1A. Then they select their name and click on it, then “level up.” Their password, which consists of 2 pictures to be selected, is taped to the inside of their yellow folders. Please motivate your child to use Raz Kids at home as our program is up and running! It can be downloaded for free at the App store or be assessed through their website at:

On another note, beginning Monday August 28 (through Thursday) I will be sending home books for your child to read as reading homework. The book has been read and discussed in class, and is on your child’s reading level. Please sit with your child and have him/her read to you, ask questions, enjoy your special moment together. Please remember to return the book the next day as it is part of a set.

Also, last week I sent home a list of sight words which your child should master. This will help him/her with reading fluency. I ask that when you feel your child has mastered the words on the list, star the sheet and send it back to school. We will proceed to send home another list.

I want to thank you for your support and cooperation thus far. If we collaborate and work together, our children will no doubt reach their maximum potential.

Have a nice (sunny!) weekend and see you at Open House!

Fondly,

Susan Burnquist
