At Graded we use the Writer's Workshop model to help our students grow as writers. A typical Writer's Workshop time will start with a minilesson, where the teacher presents and models a strategy or idea about writing. This week, the second graders' lessons have focused on telling meaningful stories, choosing a tiny topic, and turning a tiny topic into a story. Students will also often have time to discuss and practice the new strategy with a partner during the minlesson. Following the minilesson, students have an uninterrupted block of writing time where they can test out the new ideas. During this time there are two teachers in the classroom who confer with students individually, or meet with small groups to edit or revise writing or to practice new strategies. As you can see in the photos below, our second graders are already focused and determined to grow as writers this year!
