Grade 3: Curriculum Update for Week of March 30, 2020

Dear Parents,

Every week, we will post a Curriculum Update to inform you of the learning topics for the week. Please note that this is just an overview for you and students will get details in their Google Classroom.

It's also important after the first week of distance learning that your family revisit the student schedules.  Be sure to be flexible with your child and encourage them to take breaks for snacks and movement when needed.  If you need any advice or guidance on this, please contact your child's teachers, counselors, Mr. Boisjoli or Ms. Hammernik.  We would be more than happy to help.

Have a great Week 2 of Distance Learning!

Zoom Class Rules

Dear Parents,
We are sharing these rules with students this week.  It's important for us all to remember that Zoom classes are the same as classes at Graded.  We have rules for both to ensure a positive learning environment for all. Please take time to discuss these with your child(ren) and what they look like in action in your home.
Thank you!

Ensino à distância, em Português

Caros Pais,

Atenciosamente,

Professoras de Português:
Luciana Castro (luciana.castro@graded.br)
Rosana Ramos (rosana.ramos@graded.br)
Sandra Lima (sandra.lima@grded.br)

PAL Online Learning

Dear parents,

We are excited to begin our online journey. We are sure that, as Graded teachers, as well as our students and parents, we will continue to learn and have fun together and successfully.
As already shared by the school, our schedule foresees that PAL tasks for the week will be posted every Monday, at 1 pm, in your children's Portuguese Google Classrooms ( PAL 3rd grade).
My suggestion is that students do a little bit of PAL activities each day - 10 to 15 minutes a day. Therefore guidance on what to do will be given by the teacher every Monday, and the students will work with the PAL activities throughout the week.
The PAL / LS teachers will not hold online meetings, but we will use the Elefante Letrado reading platform (which allows us to assign readings and tasks to students and monitor their performance in them), as well as Flipgrid, Quizlet and other platforms. Students already have their passwords to access Elefante Letrado and Quizlet, and they are not new to students. For Flipgrid, they are using their Google Account.
The PAL / LS teachers are deeply thankful for your partnership,  and we are available for any questions by email:
PAL 2nd - Dona Nati  - natalia.forattini@graded.br;
PAL 3rd - Dona Carla - carla.ramalho@graded.br
PAL 4th - Dona Nati   - natalia.forattini@graded.br;
PAL 5th - Dona Dani  - dani.boarin@graded.br;
                 Dona Ma  -   marcela.monteiro@graded.br;
                 Dona Nati  -  natalia.forattini@graded.br;

Grade 3: Curriculum Update for the Week of March 23, 2020

Reading
Students will continue to log their reading in their online reading log and learn how to share their reading with their teachers online. They will continue studying non-fiction text and review how to access online text sources.
Writing
The class will be introduced to what writing looks like in online school. Processes and procedures will be reviewed and students will continue with the non-fiction writing. Teachers will be giving feedback on their writing via Google Classroom and Google Docs.
Math
Students will recognize that side lengths play an important part in determining the area of a rectangle. They will understand that multiplying the number of square units in a row by the number of rows produces the same result as skip-counting the squares within the array.
Science

Students will make a pulley and diagram the effort and resistance force present when the pulley works. They will share their work with video.
Portuguese
Check Google Classroom
PE, Music and Art
PE:  We will do some fitness workouts and dance routines in PE.

Counseling Resources and Contact Information for Parents

Hello parents!
In this time of e-learning away from campus, it's important to know that you have plenty of support from your Graded family!

As I have posted in the Google Classrooms for your students, I would like to also share here some resources that will help get us through this unique time.

First, a Family Technology Agreement is a good way to set guidelines now that students are on their devices more in the home. Having clear boundaries is important, especially now that the lines between what is for school and what students may claim is for school is a little more blurred.

I suggest looking at Common Sense Media's Family Tech agreement, posted in the link

For individual check-ins with students and families, your counselors are still available.
Ms Bobbie and I have both set up office hours as well as check-in times that can be scheduled via email (kevin.kooienga@graded.br) or through an app that automatically finds open times at Mr K's Counseling Schedule

Please do not hesitate to reach out for advice, tips, resources, or general questions or concerns.
Continue to follow the Google Classrooms and Grade Level blogs for more information.

All the best-
Mr K

Thursday and Friday Suggestions

Thursday and Friday Suggestions

After your first experiences with online learning, you may be looking forward to a restful few days before we start again on Monday! However, just in case you would like to do some learning on Thursday and Friday, here are some suggestions.

Math
     Children are encouraged to continue with their regular home Math routines. Depending on your teacher, these may include digital resources or their Eureka Succeed book.
     The holiday also lends itself to exploring Math outside the classroom, where real application of Math actually happens! Check out THIS website to look for ideas on how to engage your child with Math in daily life.

Language

           The center of Grade 3 home learning is daily reading, at least 30 minutes per day.  The expectation for students is that the maintain this habit over the holiday.  Tumblebooks, RAZ Kids and the Library website provide ample resources for home reading.

     Writing about your long weekend experiences is a great way to practice language skills. Also, students have become very adept at using Google Slides to create interesting presentations.

Be safe, be well. We miss you. After this break,  let's get ready for online learning on Monday!

Love,
Your Grade 3 Team

To prepare your child, please create a workspace in your home. This should be somewhere where your child is visible to you or other caregivers. Please also ensure your child has a device that has video and sound capabilities and has all recent updates. The link for Wednesday’s meeting is HERE.

I will have one hour each day when I will be available online. This time is 10:30-12:30. Should you or your child like to connect with me, please send me an email at  leighann.fitch@graded.br  Additionally, there will be individual check-in times for each child during the week. This schedule will also be posted in Google Classroom.

Finally, regular attendance and completion of activities are important for your child’s success. Your interest in their learning is invaluable.

I look forward to continuing to support your child through this transition.
