Lower School Update - February 25, 2019

The Eagle’s Nest
Two classes were awarded the Golden G award today for demonstrating the Eagle Way the past week. Congratulations to Ms. Alex’s Pre-primary class and Ms. Wilganowski’s fifth grade class!

Extended Absences
As it is close to a holiday, it may be tempting to take an extra day or two off with the kids, however we would like to remind all families of the importance of students being at school. Our program depends on students being in class for differentiated instruction. When students are away, they miss important instruction that can not be delivered through worksheets. Below is the note from the Lower School Student/Parent Handbook about such absences:

When a family must take a student away from school for an extended period, prior notice equal to the anticipated time away must be given to the School office and the student’s teachers. In most circumstances, effort will be made to provide students with work that might be accomplished outside of school. Lengthy absences (more than three days) should be reported to the Assistant Principal, who will help the student work out a makeup plan that is fair to the student and teachers. The school cannot take responsibility for diminished achievement resulting from a student’s absence. Teachers and administrators are unanimous in recommending that, whenever possible, trips and home leave be planned to coincide with school holidays. The student is responsible for making up all missed work.

Happy Carnaval
Next week we will break for Carnaval (there will be no school from March 4 to 8). We hope your family has an enjoyable time together during this festive holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, March 11.

Curriculum Update

Curriculum Update

Math: Our unit six on number (addition and subtraction, plus multiplication through arrays) is coming to an end.
Our next unit focuses on patterns, computation skills, and applying mathematics through the use of data. During
this unit students will collect real life data from their classmates, and analyze their results.

Reading: We are at the beginning of our new nonfiction reading unit.  This is an exciting unit for the students, and
complements our science unit nicely.  In this unit students will be asked to think deeply about the nonfiction books
they read.  They will identify what specifically a given book is teaching them, use the vocabulary of a given
nonfiction topic to speak about the books, and use the text features of nonfiction to best understand what they read.

Writing and Science: Students have begun their new balance and motion science unit.  During this special unit
students will work on developing their scientific knowledge on the ways objects can move, and how different forces
affect movement.  At the same time, students will be developing their writing skills to follow the scientific method
to thoroughly and accurately record their results during their experiments.  Students will also have the opportunity
to create their own rube goldberg machine at the end of this unit.

Curr

Balancing a Pencil

How can you balance a pencil vertically with just a wire and a couple of clothespins? 21 second graders constructed 21 hypothesis.  It turns out that only one was correct.  After making a few adjusments by lowering the weights below the balance point, everyone discovered at least one way.

Second attempt.

It's able to balance with one counterweight.

After a few adjustements, it worked!

My hypothesis was correct but here's another way.

My hypothesis is incorrect.

I eventually figured it out!

I kept trying!

The weight is too high!

My way didn't work, but this way does!

Trying to balance the pencil was challenging.

Make the pencil stable!

Balance and Motion Essential Questions

How can we write like scientists? We've been learning the scientific method to write a complete lab report! Soon we will be publishing our reports! Students are enjoying to discover some of the physics principles, like, the secret to balancing anything is to add  counterweights below the balance point!

PAL Update

Um momento para cuidar dos outros
(Time to care for others!)

PAL students have taken some time off classwork this week and have used their PAL background to write motivational messages for the children at Brumadinho city, in Minas Gerais. The city was hit by a massive mud flood due to the collapse of a waste war dam of the Vale mining co.
This was an initiative of the Brazilian children newspaper JOCA that we have available in our classrooms and that has put together the letters from our students and has sent them to children at Brumadinho, who are left not only homeless, but also without schools.
Thank you to all the students who took part in this project!

After School Activities
Semester two after school activities start this week. Please be sure to remind your child if they are participating. If your child has an activity, they will be brought to the LS Playground at the end of the school day to meet their activity leader. Activities end at 4:00 pm. If students do not take the bus, we ask that parents/guardians to pick students up from the activity. Any students who are remaining will be brought to the LS Office to wait for a parent/guardian. Please remember that Lower School students are not to be on campus unsupervised after 3:05 pm (they must be with an adult). If you have any questions about activities, feel free to contact Rob Switzer, our Director of Athletics and Activities by email at robert.switzer@graded.br

Swimming in the Lower School

We are very excited to have swimming become part of our Lower School Physical Education program starting in the 2019-20 school year. From 2019-20 all LS students from K3 to Grade 5 will swim twice a year as part of their swimming units in the PE program. This semester students will have an introduction to the pool and our swimming program with a trial period from March 28 to April 26.

As swimming is new to the school, the trial will allow everyone including students, teachers, and parents to become familiar with the pool and the routines around swimming lessons. This will also allow us to monitor the introduction of swimming and make any needed adjustments before the swimming units begin in the 2019-2020 school year.

As part of the trial, all LS students will have three or four swimmings lessons during their PE class time. Half of the classes will start lessons on March 28. The other half will have lessons from April 11-26. We will send out detailed information to parents including the exact days each class will swim as part of the trial.

The students will be taught swimming by their current PE teachers in addition to three other PE teachers/PE interns. All the PE teachers and interns have been trained as lifeguards and as swim instructors. A recent training has also occurred in the Graded pool so they are familiar with our swimming environment.

There will only be one PE class in the swimming pool at a time. There will be four teachers teaching, with a ratio of one teacher to five or six students. In addition to the four teachers, there will also be a lifeguard on duty and a teacher’s assistant who can assist the children with trips to the bathroom if necessary.

For children who are non-swimmers, the program will teach them how to be safe and confident in the water, and a survival stroke. For more confident swimmers, students will learn freestyle/front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly to help further develop their confidence and strength as swimmers.

The emphasis of the program is to give children a positive experience. There will be a lot of fun and games during the lesson. The water temperature in the heated pool will be around 30 degrees celsius. Children can use their choice of swimsuits (with the exception of bikinis, which are not permitted).

Students will get changed in the changeroom at the new Athletics Center. There will be a small, private designated space in the change room for LS students to change. For the younger children, their teacher’s assistant will be on hand to assist them.  For older children, there will be a teacher’s assistant or a teacher available if children need assistance. The school is also interested in having some parents volunteer to provide additional support for the children in the changeroom. More information will be sent by room parents closer to the date.

Before the swimming trial starts, all LS children will need a medical check from a doctor that says they are fit to participate in the program. This medical check is required under Brazilian law every six months. The school will arrange for these checks to be done by the school’s doctor during a PE class in mid-March. We will send detailed information about how we will do these to parents, once we have finalised the details.

Once the trial begins, children will need to bring the following to school each swimming day:
  • Swimsuit: for boys this could be board shorts, sungas - which can be paired with a rash shirt if they wanted to; for girls, they can wear a one piece, or a one-piece with board shorts, or a one-piece with board shorts and a rash shirt - if they wanted.Swim cap (Silicon swim caps are the best - they may be a little more expensive but they do the job of keeping hair dry well.)
  • Towel
  • Flip flops
  • Goggles (optional)

If you require additional information, or if you have any remaining questions, please feel free to contact our Aquatics Coordinator, Rob Cope rob.cope@graded.br, or your child’s PE teacher: Andrea Ramires (andrea.ramires@graded.br), Gisela Maldonado (gisela.maldonado@graded.br), or Enrico Pasquini (enrico.pasquini@graded.br).

We are excited about this amazing opportunity for our students, and are excited to see them use the Graded pool for the first time!
