2D: Pebbles, Sand and Silt

The last science unit of second grade is called Pebbles, Sand and Silt which takes a close look at rocks. Throughout this unit, students will conduct experiments to help them discover different properties of rocks.

The first experiment got students predicting what would happen if you rubbed two rocks together. The rocks they experimented with were basalt, scoria and tuff.  Ask a second grader what happens!

After rubbing, the rocks smelled like smoke!

Rock dust!

Rubbing basalt rocks.

Comparing different rocks.

Rubbing = friction.
