Curriculum Update

Curriculum Update

Thank you for an amazing start to the new school year. We have really enjoyed getting to know your children and look forward to another successful and productive school year. Below are the focus areas of instruction for the coming weeks.

Social Studies
We will begin our MIgration unit in Social Studies this week. We will start with an in-depth look at maps.  Students will apply the concepts of location, distance, scale, movement, and region to identify a particular place on a map.  Students will use and explain map elements to identify specific locations on a globe, including continents, oceans, and hemispheres.  Once students are comfortable using a map and can locate themselves on a world map, we will move on to tell our stories of migration. Students will describe and explain various types and patterns of settlement and land use, including contrasting the differences between migration and immigration.

Language Arts
Third graders are excited to begin working in both Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Our daily work will include opportunities to engage in whole group teachings, small group activities and independent work. Our year will begin by focusing on personal narratives where the students will be reading a variety of texts and develop writing strategies that allow them to compose their own personal narratives.  In reading, students will reflect on building strong habits to increase their comprehension. This will include applying strategies and reflecting on our reading behaviors.  Parents are encouraged to continue reading with your child and engage in meaningful conversations about literacy. We look forward to building strong reading and writing habits in each of the students.
