Mr. Maykut: Small Moments

Mr. Maykut's Class: Small Moments

Students are writing about small moments in second grade. Learning to organize ideas, add details and create vivid images are areas that students are working on.

Today I created a unique experience for the students to write about.  I told the students that they had to go to the nurse's office to get a vaccination!  We went through all the steps from beginning to end and focused on how people show feelings through dialogue, facial expressions, body movements and actions.

Just to be clear, no one got a vaccination! It was just pretend!

I asked the students to show me how they felt.  Don't tell me that you are nervous!

"The nurse?" I gulped!

"I don't like needles!"
My eyes popped out!

Aaaaahhhh!

I didn't blink!
I started to cry and I rubbed my eyes.

I covered my mouth.

When we got to the nurse's office, we met the nurse, took a seat and waited.

I frowned.
Waiting to see the nurse.

Then we met the nurse.

First I had to roll up my sleeve.
The nurse helped me.
"I'm scared!"

The nurse cleaned my arm.

The nurse used rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball.

"I can't look!"
The nurse said, "It will only hurt a bit."

Tears trickled down my cheeks.

"That hurts!!!!!!"
My body was shaking!
"My arm hurts!"

The nurse unwrapped a bandage.
f

The nurse put on a bandage.
I survived!
The nurse gave me a cookie for being brave!
