Grade 3 Curriculum Update for the Week of June 1

CHANGEMAKER PROJECT Reading/Writing	Students will give their final speeches on Monday. Then, they will give and receive feedback on all their hard work. To finish off our changemaker unit, students will create a comic strip about their changemaker.
Math	We will continue our work in perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. This week’s screen free project will have a Math focus instead of the usual Social Studies/Language focus.
Social Studies	The students will explore how they can be changemakers by performing acts of kindness.
Portuguese	PLA: Reading and spelling study PAL: Revising weekend activity sentences; practicing talking about objects of the house; reading.
PE/Music/Art	PE:Roblox Workouts, Star Wars fitness, Go Noodle Music: Reading Music - Note Name Memory Game Art: Art with Mati and Dada

Grade 3 Curriculum Update for Week of May 18

CHANGEMAKER PROJECT Reading/Writing	Students will begin writing their persuasive essay to convince an audience that their chosen person is indeed a changemaker. This week will focus on taking all the research they have done last week and getting it organized so they will be able to draft. They will review writing thesis statements and how to write a beginning that hooks the reader.
Math	We will begin our Geometry unit. The goal will be to understand that shapes in different categories may share attributes, and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). The class will learn to recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals.
Social Studies	The class will learn about how and why societies memorialise changemakers, looking at examples of monuments and memorials.
Portuguese	PLA: Reading biographies: Wangari Maathai: a mulher-árvore da África Spelling study about C x QU  PAL: Reviewing and finishing unfinished work; Reading on Elefante Letrado.

Grade 3 Curriculum Update for the Week of May 11

CHANGEMAKER PROJECT Reading/Writing	Language and Reading will totally integrate into our Changemaker Project. This will prepare the students for their Changemaker Persuasive Speech at the end of the school year. "Reading" and "Language" will no longer be the topic assigned in Google Classroom. It will now be "Changemaker Project" starting on Monday. The focus on this week will be reading to research for their persuasive speech about their chosen changemaker. The students will review reading for main ideas and details, note taking, cause/effect and story elements. Students will also be completing a detailed portrait of their changemaker. This portrait project will be assigned on Monday and due on Thursday.
Math	Students have completed their unit on fractions and are now starting to solve two-step word problems using the four operations. They will represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Students will practice assessing the reasonableness of  their answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
Social Studies	The class will investigate what it means to be a changemaker in their own lives. They will apply what they have learned about changemakers to make a positive change in their own world.
Portuguese	PLA: Reading biography of relatives wrote by students. Reading biographies (change makers) at Elefante Letrado. PAL: Talking about the weekend; Parts and objects of the house; Some things we can do at home; Reading on Elefante letrado.

Small changes in Distance Learning

Hello,

Starting next week, things will look slightly different in Distance Learning. 

Changemaker Project

Language and Reading will totally integrate into a Changemaker Project. This will prepare the students for their Changemaker Persuasive Speech at the end of the school year. "Reading" and "Language" will no longer be the topic assigned in Google Classroom. It will now be the "Changemaker Project" starting on Monday.

Each day, a Changemaker Project topic will be assigned at 8 am. It will be Reading and/or Language focused but will be labeled "Changemaker Project". 

Once they complete the task, they will then work on a hands-on task about their changemaker. This task is offscreen, hands-on, and creative. Students will have Mon-Thurs to complete the task. This task will be assigned each Monday and due on Thursday. It will also be assigned under the topic "Changemaker Project". 

Students will work on the reading/language focused task AND the hands-on task during their usual Reading and Language time. 

Catch-Up Day/Curriculum Choice Day

Friday will be a Catch-Up Day and/or Curriculum Choice Day during the Reading and/or Language block (from 8 am to 10 am). On Friday, the following will happen based on your child's needs:

Your child's teacher will email you and your child a reminder of the tasks they have not completed during the week.

Also, your teacher may request a Zoom meeting with your child to help them complete tasks and offer support. 

If you do not see an email, that means all tasks for the week have been completed  and you can move on to the Curriculum Choice menu. 

Curriculum Choice Menu

Students who complete their catch-up tasks for reading and language, or start Friday already caught up will be given a variety of activities to choose from. These activities will be curriculum-based, give opportunities for extension, and be consist of mostly offscreen options. 

Curriculum Choice will be assigned to all students on Google Classroom on Friday. This is to give Catch-Up students options if they finish their assigned Changemakers Project tasks before our 10:00 am class meeting. After our class meeting, students will continue to work in their assigned activities throughout the day. Math assignments will continue to be posted as usual.

Grade 3 Curriculum Update for the Week of April 27

Reading	Reading and Social Studies will be closely connected this week. Students will read and summarize biographies  They will identify a changemaker and explain how he or she has helped improve his or her community.
Writing	The class will begin another 5-paragraph persuasive essay. They will up the level of their writing by thoughtfully choosing topics and review research skills.
Math	Students will recognize and show that equivalent fractions  have the same size, though not necessarily the same shape. They will generate equivalent fractions by using visual fraction models  and the number line.
Social Studies	The class will look at changemakers and how they make positive differences in their communities.
Portuguese	PLA: Ortografia: G ou GU e leitura da biografia do Louis Braille PAL: Students will do some review on routine verbs and read books on Elefante Letrado

Grade 3 Curriculum Update for the Week of April 22

Reading	Students will review their understandings from last week regarding biographies. They will focus more closely on character traits.
Writing	Writing will focus on giving thoughtful and constructive feedback on our writing and that of others. We will be participating in a virtual Grade 2 Writing celebration and also work on our video speaking and presenting skills.
Math	Students will look at fractions as a number on the number line. They will practice representing fractions on a number line diagram.
Social Studies	There will be no Social Studies posted on Google Classroom this week.
Portuguese	PLA: Edição e revisão da biografia de alguém da família; leitura da biografia de Ida Pfeiffer. PAL: Students will be working with verbs in the past to talk about their weekends and routine verbs in the present to talk about things they do everyday.

Grade 3 Curriculum Update for Week of April 13, 2020

Reading	We will read "to learn" biographies by determining the main idea and details. The class will analyze the chronology of biographies using a timeline, identify cause and effect relationships between subjects and historical events and use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Writing	Students will draft their persuasive 5-paragraph essays. They will introduce the topic they are writing about, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. Students will share their writing with peers and practice giving thoughtful feedback.
Math	The class will continue their work on fractions. They will add to their understanding by looking at unit fractions and their relations to the whole. They will begin comparing unit fractions and specifying the whole.
Science	Students will inquire into the question: what is a changemaker? They will also consider the difference between rights and responsibilities.
Portuguese	PAL: Students  will talk about their weekends, and work on routine verbs, using the song “Pequeno Cidadão”. They will also read a book on Elefante Letrado on Friday, and make a padlet post about their favorite book on Elefante Letrado. PLA: Uso da letra G

Grade 3: Curriculum Update for the Week of March 23, 2020

Reading	Students will continue to log their reading in their online reading log and learn how to share their reading with their teachers online. They will continue studying non-fiction text and review how to access online text sources.
Writing	The class will be introduced to what writing looks like in online school. Processes and procedures will be reviewed and students will continue with the non-fiction writing. Teachers will be giving feedback on their writing via Google Classroom and Google Docs.
Math	Students will recognize that side lengths play an important part in determining the area of a rectangle. They will understand that multiplying the number of square units in a row by the number of rows produces the same result as skip-counting the squares within the array.
Science	Students will make a pulley and diagram the effort and resistance force present when the pulley works. They will share their work with video.

Thursday and Friday Suggestions

Thursday and Friday Suggestions 

After your first experiences with online learning, you may be looking forward to a restful few days before we start again on Monday! However, just in case you would like to do some learning on Thursday and Friday, here are some suggestions. 

Math 

     Children are encouraged to continue with their regular home Math routines. Depending on your teacher, these may include digital resources or their Eureka Succeed book. 

     The holiday also lends itself to exploring Math outside the classroom, where real application of Math actually happens! Check out THIS website to look for ideas on how to engage your child with Math in daily life.

Language

           The center of Grade 3 home learning is daily reading, at least 30 minutes per day.  The expectation for students is that the maintain this habit over the holiday.  Tumblebooks, RAZ Kids and the Library website provide ample resources for home reading.

     Writing about your long weekend experiences is a great way to practice language skills. Also, students have become very adept at using Google Slides to create interesting presentations.

Mr. Ro Distance Learning

Dear parents,

Tomorrow we will begin our distance learning program. This proves to be a unique experience for us all. Rest assured that we have been planning and preparing to ensure a quality learning experience for your child. We will be using our grade level blogs to post information about the curriculum overall as usual.  Please be sure to bookmark the blog if you haven’t already as information regarding Lower School is also posted here. This will make it easier to access.

Students will be using Mr. Ro Google Classroom to receive all activities and assignments for their distance learning. They are aware of their login information. (gr######@graded.br and password) However, should you need assistance logging in, please let me know. I encourage you to ask your child about Google Classroom and have them show you the work they are doing. 

The student schedule below outlines what each day will look like. The times listed are the times that activities will be posted for each subject area. Please add movement and nutrition breaks throughout the day as needed. We encourage students to have breaks from screens, so please complete the activities when appropriate for your family.  We do however, need your child present for class meetings which will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:00 am. 

To prepare your child, please create a workspace in your home. This should be somewhere where your child is visible to you or other caregivers. Please also ensure your child has a device that has video and sound capabilities and has all recent updates.   Here is the link for our Zoom Mr. Ro's classroom meeting room. I will send a link for a Zoom call via Google Classroom as well for your convenience.

I will have two hours each day when I will be available online. This time is 10:30-12:30. Should you or your child like to connect with me, please send me an email at felippe.rozentzvaig@graded.br  Additionally, there will be individual check-in times for each child during the week.
