Math Mall Profit Will be Used to Purchase |Blankets for Homeless

After our Math Mall, all first grade classes combined their profits which totaled 1,282,00 Reais! This money was donated to an NGO called Amigos do Sopão, that helps homeless people in São Paulo.
Our very own, Beth Coelho, volunteers by cooking meals there every Saturday!

News from Our Librarian!

Reading Here and There and EVERYWHERE! 

Did you know that you can read online books (and magazines) through our library on any device? All can be accessed from our website OR you can download the Destiny Discover app. Choose Graded Lower School from the locations. You can browse as a guest to check if we have a book in our collection or to get the login information for online resources like World Book for Kids and Culturegrams. You can also login with your parent account to access additional resources, to check out eBooks, to see when your books are due, etc. Stop by the library if you'd like to know more about what's available. 

I've also been sharing a great resource called TumbleBooks with students. They are excited to try it at home. Tumblebooks has over 1100 books, and our subscription allows families to read them anywhere. Some are eBooks that the students will read to themselves, and some are read-alongs that highlight the text while it's being read to them. This is a great way to increase fluency. There is a TumbleBooks app available in the AppStore, and you can log in with username: graded, password: books.

Save the Date! First Grade Sleepover Will Be on June 1st!

Please save the date for our First Grade Sleep Over! It will be on Friday, June 1 as an end of the year celebration. More detailed information will be sent to you in April and May so stay tuned. 


     

We Need Cereal Boxes!

First graders are beginning the final units for Reader’s and Writer’s workshops. Students will focus on character traits and characteristics during reading. During writing students will begin developing their own characters they will use in a series of stories. These are two very exciting units! As students are beginning their series units we will be collecting cereal boxes to make a box set. Our hope is it will look a little like the picture below.

Dear Families,

We hope you are doing well and enjoying the new year.  In October Graded hosted a parent coffee to discuss our school’s child protection policy.  At this presentation we shared that the school counselors would be delivering lessons on personal safety to all students in grades 1-12.  These lessons will be beginning in the upcoming weeks before Carnival.

The lessons are from the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) Child Protection Program.  They are research-based, developmentally appropriate lessons designed specifically for the needs of students in international schools.  The lessons will cover age-appropriate information about personal safety, being assertive, and talking with safe adults.  These lessons will be delivered during regularly scheduled counseling classes by Ms. Bobbie Neubern (grades 1 & 2) and Ms. Heidi Pierce (grades 3-5). 

The curriculum will cover:

• Safe touch(es)
• Unsafe touch(es)
• Unwanted touch(es)
• Saying “no” and other safety steps
• Reporting to a trusted adult

These concepts are covered in a manner that allows for the depth of understanding and content to increase as students advance through the grades.  The information that is taught to your child will meet the developmental needs of your child’s age group to keep them informed and safe.

At Graded we realize that this curriculum is just a piece of what we all need to do to keep children safe. Research shows that young children retain skills when they are practiced and reinforced at home so please help your child review her/his learning by asking questions at home and reminding your child about safe and unsafe touch.

K and 1st Grade Holiday Concert- Dec 13th at 8:30 am

Holiday Concert and Party!

Dear Parents,                           

                                                                                                   

Please come watch our amazing first graders singing in the auditorium on Dec.13th at 8:30 am. Students should dress up for their performance. (For girls dresses or skirt and blouses are suggested. For boys, a shirt with collar and pants or bermuda shorts.) Children may change into regular clothes after the class party.

Parents are all invited to attend our class party right after the Concert. Students will be waiting to serve and celebrate the end of the year with you. Your presence is very important. If you cannot attend, please send another family member of friend.

Party Clothes Day.  Let's all support our PrePrimary and Grade 1 students and wear fancy party clothes in honor of their holiday concert.  Sparkles and ties are welcome.

Crazy Day.  Maybe you want to wear your clothes backwards.  Maybe you want to wear crazy clothes.  Maybe you want to do your hair crazy.  Maybe you want to wear all neon.  Dress crazy.

Friday, December 15

PJ Day.  Wear your comfy pajamas and get ready for comfort all day long.

Halloween!

Halloween is a few weeks away and this year our Halloween celebration will be on Wednesday, November 1st. The morning will be normal, but in the afternoon all the elementary children parade around the campus in their costumes at 2pm and there will be a classroom party with snacks and activiteis. Please contact your homeroom teacher or homeroom parent for information on how to help. Get ready to have some spectacular spooky fun!

Curriculum Update: What's Going On in First Grade

Literacy: Students will be making published versions of their small moment books. They are continuing to work on reading fluency and comprehension with their just right books.

Math: Students are exploring odd even number patterns, shapes, and number grid patterns. They are using a number line to add and subtract and will be introduced to telling time to the half hour.

Science: Students participated in the magnet fair, in which they were able to observe and experiment like scientists.

Social Studies: Students have worked on kindness and way to show kindness when cooperating.

Portuguese: Os alunos trabalharam em estações (leitura, escrita, jogos), fazendo diferentes atividades para refletir sobre os diferentes sons das vogais e atentando para como elas funcionam quando se juntam às consoantes.

Dorina Nowill Celebration

On Friday we celebrated the success of our first grade walk-a-thon. First grade raised R$27.237,00! Congratulations. The money will be spent on remodeling the playroom at the institute. The representatives were very appreciative and said it was a special experience having our first graders visit and raise so much money for the institute. Thank you to all those who helped and cheered on the first graded we could not have done it without you!

Thank you so much to all the parents who came out and supported our first grade students! The children are all extremely proud of their accomplishment! They demonstrated perseverance and determination to run/walk as many laps as possible in the thirty minute time frame to earn as much as they could for Fundacao Dorina Nowill. We loved having parents and siblings out to join us as well! Thank you all!! 

Please remember to collect the money you raised from your laps and bring it to school as soon as possible. We are presenting the final check to Fundacao Dorina Nowill on Friday. Thank you so much for your continued support!

First graders continue their learning journey to become experts on magnets. Students have read many books, watched videos, experimented with magnets, visited a magnet fair and participated in a number of hands on activities to help reinforce concepts related to magnets. Now they are ready for the next step...

First Grade Walk-a-thon

First Grade Walk-a-thon

Pledge sheets for our Walk-a-thon were sent home in your child's folder today!

On Friday Sept. 29th, all first graders will complete as many laps as they can on the track  to raise money for Fundacao Dorina Nowill, a foundation that helps the blind by publishing and distributing books in braille.

Before the walk-a-thon begins, students need to get pledges from friends and family members who will sponsor them for a certain amount of money per lap. (Most students should complete between 5 to 10 laps.)  All money raised will go towards supporting Fundacao Dorina Nowill.  Please help your child get pledges.  Every first grader will participate even if they are unable to get pledges.  Parents are invited to come and cheer us on or walk along with us on Sept 29th at 9:15 am on the track.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Pledge forms are due on or before the morning of Sept 29th.  Then they will be tallied and returned to the students that day so they can immediately start collecting their pledges.  Students will have a week to collect and bring in the money.
