PAL Online Learning

Dear parents,

We are excited to begin our online journey. We are sure that, as Graded teachers, as well as our students and parents, we will continue to learn and have fun together and successfully.
As already shared by the school, our schedule foresees that PAL tasks for the week will be posted every Monday, at 1 pm, in your children's Portuguese Google Classrooms ( PAL 3rd grade).
My suggestion is that students do a little bit of PAL activities each day - 10 to 15 minutes a day. Therefore guidance on what to do will be given by the teacher every Monday, and the students will work with the PAL activities throughout the week.
The PAL / LS teachers will not hold online meetings, but we will use the Elefante Letrado reading platform (which allows us to assign readings and tasks to students and monitor their performance in them), as well as Flipgrid, Quizlet and other platforms. Students already have their passwords to access Elefante Letrado and Quizlet, and they are not new to students. For Flipgrid, they are using their Google Account.
The PAL / LS teachers are deeply thankful for your partnership,  and we are available for any questions by email:

Brazilian Week in PAL (Portuguese as an Additional Language) class

Dear parents of  PAL (Portuguese as an Additional Language) 3 students,

September 7 is the day we celebrate Brazilian Independence Day. For this reason, this is a special week at school!
We have been learning about the Brazilian flag and National Anthem, the regions of this country and some typical food from each region.
On Thursday, we will have a special Assembly (only for students) when we will experience some music and culture from our country, with the group "Malas Portam".  After that, students will visit the event organized by our PTA called "Brasil de muitos lugares e sabores", where they will have a chance to taste some typical food and learn more about the country.
On this day (Sept. 5th, we encourage students to wear the one or more colors of the Brazilian flag (green, yellow, blue, white).
We encourage you to ask your children about what they have been learning in Portuguese class. They will have a lot to share!
Thank you very much for you partnership.

PAL Updates

    Taking Books Home

PAL students had a great time during class today when choosing books from our class library to take home and to read to parents, relatives, and friends.

Students are excited to read to these books at home, some have chosen challenging books and were aware that, on these choices, they should be looking for word understanding.

Hope you'll have a great time reading with them!

PAL Update

Toca da Raposa

Last Thursday, April 18th, students had so much fun when they got to know the characters from the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, at Toca da Raposa, in Juquitiba, São Paulo.

The visit closes the unit about Sítio do Picapau Amarelo and starts the unit Contos de Fada, in which students will learn about fairy tales around the world as a starting point to studying characters internal and external traits and sequencing of events in stories.

PAL Update

Um momento para cuidar dos outros
(Time to care for others!)

PAL students have taken some time off classwork this week and have used their PAL background to write motivational messages for the children at Brumadinho city, in Minas Gerais. The city was hit by a massive mud flood due to the collapse of a waste war dam of the Vale mining co.
This was an initiative of the Brazilian children newspaper JOCA that we have available in our classrooms and that has put together the letters from our students and has sent them to children at Brumadinho, who are left not only homeless, but also without schools.
Thank you to all the students who took part in this project!

PAL Update

Since the beginning of the school year, our daily activities in PAL classes have been the shared reading of Peter Pan and Turma do Sítio do Amarelo. This is an adaptation of  M.Barrie's Peter Pan with the famous characters from Monteiro Lobato's stories: Emília, Narizinho, Pedrinho, Visconde, Tia Nastácia and Dona Benta. Students have been working with character descriptions and riddles to guess which characters are being described in written and oral formats.

Novice PAL students have been learning the alphabet in Portuguese, how to spell their names and the colors in Portuguese.
Galinha Pintadinha's ABC song has been a success among them and we encourage parents to play it at home and sing along with children.

PAL update

Last Friday in PAL class, we started the reading day of the week. Students were invited to explore the books in the class library and choose books to take home. The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to explore books independently and locate the information they understand, to report to the class teacher on Friday of the following week, when they have to take the books back to PAL class. We hope to be promoting pleasurable opportunities and students' independence with this contact.

PAL updates

PAL students have been reading and learning about the Brazilian folklore characters Saci, Cuca, Curupira, Caipora and Iara. This way, students learn new terms and respond to comprehension questions naturally, practicing the target language.
Our next step is reading stories by the famous Brazilian author Monteiro Lobato, who created the magic world of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, in which his characters get involved in many adventures while learning about other Brazilian folklore characters, Geography, Science , History and Mythology.

PAL updates

PAL students have been working with the reading platform Elefante Letrado towards being independent when choosing o livro certo para mim ,"the right book for me". When choosing, students have been considering how much they can understand from the book and explain about the story.
Os alunos praticaram falar as palavras "certinho".
Students also practice to say the words correctly, when presenting to the class.

Students have also been such great risk takers, accepting the challenge of reading the books they have chosen in the platform to the whole class! After that, they got feedback from their peers concerning their book choice and their pronunciation, and ...

... from the teacher, also setting goals for the next reading activity.
