Curriculum Update: What's Going on in First Grade

Literacy: In writing students are working on writing a book review. Their reviews will be published and displayed in the lower school library in the upcoming weeks. During reading students are continuing to work on fluency and comprehension skills.

Math: Students are learning fact-finding strategies to develop fact power, will be working on name-collection boxes, and will be introduced to the centimeter.

Science: In science students were able to observe in our classrooms the life cycle of a plant. Also, we read a book about each stage of the life cycle.

Social Studies: Students continue interviewing Graded community members to learn more about their jobs and how they contribute to the community as a whole. Through this, first graders are realizing that each community helper is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle- each one is important.

Portuguese PLA: Para se prepararem para a escrita de sua própria versão do livro "Não Confunda", os alunos estão criando um "banco de rimas". Para isso, eles buscam palavras que rimam, consultando os colegas e pesquisando nos murais e em livros da classe.

Portuguese PAL: Students have been excited, singing and learning new vocabulary: finding new rhymes and reading them aloud. For the next weeks, they will be making and writing new rhymes.

LS Family Movie Night Tomorrow (March 9)

Our Family Movie Night is tomorrow! Food and drinks will be available for sale starting at 5:00 pm in the Student Center. The movie will start at 6:00 pm on the field (or in the auditorium if it rains). Please remember to bring warm clothes and a blanket to sit on. Also, no food or drink is permitted on the field so please be sure to eat prior to the start of the movie.

1st Grade Music Program

As children become mature, they grow in their ability to make finer distinctions about the sounds they hear; consequently, their musical understanding increases. In the first grade, students are old enough to become familiar with music terminology, which enables them to develop a greater sense of consciousness over the musical material introduced in preschool. The primary goal of the first grade, thus, is to attach a name to the musical material taught previously. While the first section of the course is dedicated to distinguishing the properties of music (loud/soft, long/short, tone color, and high/low), later sequences teach the major pentatonic scale, ascending and descending diatonic scales, accurate singing of two-tone intervals 

(“sol-mi” solfege), greeting songs, music conversations, and echo games.

Family Movie Night

Join us this Friday for Family Movie Night! Food and drinks will be sold at 5:00 pm, the movie start at 6:00 pm on the field. As we will be sitting on the field, please bring a blanket to sit on and warm clothes if the weather is cool. RSVP here by Wednesday so we know how many people will be attending and to vote on the movie you would like to watch! The result of the movie vote will be posted on this blog on Thursday.

Grandparents and Special Friends

During our next round of Learning Community assemblies we are extending the invitation to more members of the community. We encourage grandparents who live in Sao Paulo (or are visiting) to join us. If your child’s grandparent is not here, or unable to attend, we welcome you to invite any other relatives or friends to visit. Of course, parents are always welcome as well! After the assembly, all guests will have the opportunity to stop by the classroom for a short activity. We look forward to many visitors to share our learning with! Please RSVP for your grandparent and/or special friend.

Celebration of the World

Our annual celebration of the different cultures at Graded will be on Saturday, April 7. It is always an enjoyable day of culture, food, and fun. Please mark your calendars!

Around the Lower School

Ms. Keane's Week: Toca da Raposa and Band

Toca da Raposa:

What an amazing field trip!! We got to see so many plants and animals. So much learning and fun was packed into one day.

First we got breakfast when we arrived, then headed to the jungle gym to learn about what animals eat and the "circle of life." The students loved the bridge and ropes course. 

Next we went to check out all the animals. We definitely learned a lot, like the different feet of birds and what each type uses them for: swimming, running, and grabbing. As we continued to look at more animals we learned that the animals at Toca da Raposa are kept there because they can't survive in the wild. 

Then we went on a nature hike and learned about ant hills, the oldest tree, and other interesting plants. We were lucky enough to see a rare lizard. 

Finally we learned about animal foot prints and got to make them to take home. As part of making them was with flour we got to go down the flour slide. 

Our field trip was amazing filled with learning and fun. If you can go take a trip to check it out.

Band Concert

We had the lucky opportunity to watch the band before their competition. We not only loistened to songs like ones from Beauty and the Beast, but we also learned about the instruments. Such a lovely concert.  

Assim Assado - Música da semana na aula de Português

Esta semana, ouvimos a música "Assim Assado", composta pelo músico Paulo Tatit, do Palavra Cantada. Para fazer esta música, ele se baseou no livro de mesmo título de Eva Furnari.
