Upcoming Events:

On Thursday, May 24:

Math Mall Practice: We are in need of change!! Please make sure to send in centavos (5, 10, 25, and 50) tomorrow to help students with the math mall and making change. Every student should have their own.

On Friday, May 25:

Community Assembly: Please come watch the students at our final community assembly in the auditorium at 8:10. 

Math Mall: Our math mall will begin at 9:00 after the community assembly. Please make sure to bring in 1 real coins to buy from our class and students will need to also have 1 real to buy from Ms. England's math mall. 

Overnight Experience: Emergency contact forms are due. Please make sure to send them in or your student will not be able to attend. If you would like to know the schedule of events please check out the blog post. Also students will be coming home with a packing list to help them get prepared. Please read it over with them carefully. Labeling items is very helpful. An easy way to pack is to use a carry-on bag. This way, is not too heavy for first graders to roll all the way down to the classroom on Friday am, and then up to the student center for pick up on Saturday morning.

Other Reminders

Cereal Boxes: We are collecting cereal boxes to use for their series books. We only have enough for half the class. If anyone has extra cereal boxes we would greatly appreciate them. So please check out the blog post to get an idea of what we need.

Donations: We are still collecting donations to win a PIZZA Party. We need school materials, hygiene products, and food that doesn't go bad. Check out the blog post. 

Sleepover Update

Our overnight experience is almost here. Remember that forms are due this Friday, May 25 so please make sure to send them if you have not done so already. Check out the schedule below of the activities during the sleepover on June 1st. If you have any further questions please contact your homeroom teacher.

Ms. Keane's Day with Buba!

Last week I got to bring my french bulldog, Buba, to school. He helped the high school students with test anxiety and he got to stay for the day and learn with our students. Check out the photos below.

Learning Community D Assembly

We will have our final learning community assembly for this school year on Friday with Community D. Start time is 8:15 am in the auditorium. We hope you can join us to celebrate our learning!

Graded and PTA Volunteer Recognition Breakfast

If you have volunteered in any way this school year, we want to show our appreciation! Please join us on May 30 between 8:00 and 9:30 am in the Student Center. The work you do at school makes such a difference in our community we want to celebrate this with you.

June 1 - Regular School Day

Friday, June 1 is a regular school day for us. While it may be tempting to extend the May 31 holiday, we encourage all students to be in attendance on that day.

Curriculum Update: What's Going on in First Grade

Literacy: Students have been working hard on producing their very own series books! In reading students are learning to compare and contrast books they read.

Math: Students continue to work on place value up to one hundred. They will be adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. Students will work on fractional parts of a whole.

Social Studies: Students are finishing up the unit on "Family" and understanding how families change over time from past to present.

Science: Students will begin a unit on States of Matter. Students will learn about the properties of solids and liquids.

Portuguese PLA: Estamos iniciando a última unidade do ano: um projeto de pesquisa sobre animais brasileiros ameaçados de extinção. Nesta unidade, trabalharemos habilidades de leitura para que os alunos possam "ler para saber mais sobre um assunto" enquanto localizam palavras-chave e informações específicas em textos informativos.

Portuguese PAL: 1st grade PAL students will start studying and researching about animals. They will learn information about size, weight, habitat, what they eat and how many babies they have.

Ms. England's Class Math Mall

Math Mall

A friendly reminder to all our parents: 

Throughout the year, our class has been learning about money which has helped us count, add and subtract by 1s, 5s, and 10s, and 25s.  Now it’s time to apply what we’ve been learning! This Friday, May 25 the First Grade Math Mall will open for business!  Between the hours of 9:00-10:00, family and friends are invited to visit the Math Mall in our class, K1, to make purchases.  Item prices will be between 5 and 95 centavos. We kindly ask that you come prepared with many $R1 coins as you might like to spend (please refrain from bringing any bills). Students will select a local charity in which to donate all proceeds from the math mall.

To prepare for the Math Mall, we have been preparing items to sell. The purpose of the Math Mall is to give our students an opportunity to practice adding prices and making change for amounts under R$1. Besides, of course, having fun!

The Math Mall will be open for about an hour and we hope to count on your presence that day. You can help us by sending in empty egg cartons we can use to make our very our cash registers. Another way you can help us is to donate Brazilian coins- so we can start practicing with them in class. Thank you in advance for your support!
